5000 immigrants from 131 countries obtained nationality on Australia Citizenship Day and the majority of them were from India, the UK, and South Africa. They have received the Australian nationality as a part of the Australia Citizenship Day celebrations across the country. Even as the Federal government is clashing with the local councils regarding their rights to conduct ceremonies, Australia has welcomed thousands of immigrants as its citizens on Australia Citizenship Day. Peter Dutton the Immigration and Border Protection Minister congratulated 400 new Australian citizens at the ceremony held in Calamvale in Brisbane. Meanwhile, the citizenship changes are struck owing to the opposition from Nick Xenophon and his team, as quoted by the SBS. Peter Dutton said that Citizenship signifies common dedication to the Australia values of freedom, security respect, and democracy. Sir Peter Cosgrove the Governor-General attended the ceremony at Canberra’s Government House. Sydney, Darwin, and Melbourne also witnessed major ceremonies. Meanwhile, the Melbourne council voted to eliminate all references to Australia Day on January 26 as a mark of respect for the Aboriginal community. On the other hand, Moreland City Council said that the federal government should not deprive it of the right to conduct citizenship ceremonies. It also added that it will continue to hold citizenship ceremonies on January 26. After Melbourne Councils voted to abolish ceremonies on January 26 and Australia Day Darebin and Yarra councils forfeited rights to conduct citizenship ceremonies. Alex Hawke the Assistant Immigration Minister said that these councils have violated code for Australia Citizenship ceremonies. The events must not be utilized for religious, partisan or political purposes according to the code. Action against Moreland council is being considered by the federal government.
