This organization helps migrants in Australia find jobs in regions

29-year-old Ali Hussain migrated from Pakistan to Australia five months ago. He was accompanied by his wife and 18-month-old daughter. 

Ali initially moved to Perth; however, he struggled to find a job. This forced him to look at other avenues of finding work.  

Ali contacted Regional Opportunities Australia, a new organization that helped migrants find work in Australia. ROA helped Ali find work and settle down in Leeton, a small town in the Riverina region of New South Wales. 

Mahir Momand, CEO of ROA, says that ROA places migrants in permanent jobs. These jobs are not seasonal or fly-in-fly-out types. The organization believes that if immigrants move to regional areas, they should do so permanently. Regional Australia is facing a skill shortage and to address that it is important to connect the skills of immigrants who have newly arrived in Australia or are living in big cities. 

Dr Sajeda Tuli from the University of Canberra analyzed ABS data. The data showed that between 2011 and 2016, 13,79,055 international immigrants moved to Australia. 86% of these immigrants settled in the major cities, while only 14% moved to the areas outside of these cities. 

17-year-old Ahmed Bilal also moved from Perth to Leeton in search of work. He says he is glad he made the switch as there are many job opportunities available. Also, the rent is much lower as compared to the cities. However, Ahmed wants to work in his original field as a mechanic. 

ROA also helps migrants get accreditation for their original line of work. 

Mr Momand says that migrants often find it difficult to get their qualifications recognized in Australia. This makes it difficult to adjust to life in Australia, particularly in the cities. In a big city, if you are unemployed, the cost of living is high, and hence the sense of belonging is not as strong as it could be in a regional area. 

The Australian Govt. announced two new Regional Visas earlier this year- the Subclass 491 and the Subclass 494 Visas. Visa holders must live in the regional areas for at least three years to qualify for Permanent Residency.
