Merits and Demerits of a 4-Day Working Week

Would-productivity-increase-or-decrease-in-a-4-day-work-week

Key aspects of 4-day work week

  • The 4-Day work week is conducted by a non-profit foundation known as “4-Day Week Global” affiliated to Oxford University
  • It is a six-month trial with a total of 7,000 employees and 150 organisations
  • Over three dozen companies in the US and Canada are actively participating in the six-month trial
  • More than 1,000 US employees have supported the 4-Day work week trial in January, 2022
  • 37 percent of the employees are willing to take a 5 percent pay cut for a 4-Day workweek

Overview:

Over three dozen companies in the US and Canada are actively participating in the six-month trial of a 4-day work week. This is conducted by a non-profit foundation known as “4-Day Week Global” affiliated to Oxford University with a total of 7,000 employees and 150 organizations who are globally involved with no loss of pay.

Four day working week

As captivating as a 4-day work week sounds to the workers, it is concerning to the employers.

According to the bill that was introduced in the California legislature, suggested a regular salary scale for

32 hours of work per week and this measure was delayed by the committee as the decision wasn’t widely accepted and re-emerge in 2023.

However, over three dozen companies in the US and Canada are actively participating in the six-month trial of a 4-day work week. This is conducted by a non-profit foundation known as “4-Day Week Global” affiliated to Oxford University with a total of 7,000 employees and 150 organizations who are globally involved with no loss of pay.

According to the survey conducted for over 1,000 US employees in January, 2022, 92 percent of individuals are willing to extend their support in implementing a 4-day work week, 79 percent supporting mental health and 82 percent of them mentioned that it will help increase productivity.

Are the employers ready to accept the change?

It is understandable that the change can be thought-provoking and challenging as the work-related responsibilities seem to interrupt quite often but some of the employers are in the quest to find out how the work is meant to be by trying a 4-Day work week themselves and worked out the best for them.

The employers suggest that a widespread option of adapting to a shorter workweek will reach a huge group of people that will alter the consumer behaviour, expectation of the customer, and reshape the services.

As the employers believe that it is complicated to implement this new and massive change, they also demand to pull few other levers in the aspect of workplace flexibility such as, choosing the work hours they wish to work unlike 9-to-5, or the run other errands efficiently during work hours that will make their jobs more attractive and agreeable.

  • Meeting-free Friday or reducing the number of meetings on the whole
  • Managing stress of emails, instant messages or texts using Telepressure used to respond to work-related messages immediately.
  • Extended weekend offs on occasional basis which allows the “work is stacking up while I’m away” feeling especially during longer vacation.
  • A couple of non-working hours each day for good mental health

  • Canada plans to strengthen its healthcare system by the inclusion of immigrants with healthcare education.
  • It will include any temporary resident, present or incoming, and international students in the healthcare database.
  • The Labor Force Survey Data of 2017 report that immigrants are a vital contribution to the healthcare sector of Canada.

Recommendations by WES for Canada’s Healthcare System

The policy brief of WES makes 6 recommendations to shed light on the matter.

  1. The data collection by the IRCC or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada on the educational background and intended employment for all the classes of immigrants needs to be improved. It would include:
  • Obtaining the type and level of healthcare education and training, the status of license in other jurisdictions, and the intended employment role of all the internationally-educated health professionals or IEHP migrants to Canada. It includes all the immigration categories such as temporary workers, permanent residents, refugees, and international students;
  • Tracking of the IEHPs who switch from study permit/temporary work to permanent residency or citizenship status;
  • Continuing IRCC’s collaboration with Statistics Canada to develop the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) and supporting enhanced data exchanges, for example, through the social data linkage environment;
  1. Implement the Disaggregated Data Action Plan by Statistics Canada announced in the federal budget of 2021.
  2. Improve and regulate the process of reporting for occupational regulatory bodies.

Higher standard of Canadian immigration to address labor shortages

  1. The provincial occupational regulatory bodies are required to collect the data on IEHPs looking for registration in healthcare professions.
  2. The data reporting requirements need to be standardized for occupational regulatory bodies in the healthcare sector and among provinces. The data must have the following information:
    • The number of IEHPs who have applied for professional registration in the applicant pool.
    • The number of successful and unsuccessful IEHP applicants for each year.
    • Detailed information on demographics about successful and unsuccessful applicants.
    • The duration of the application and assessment process.
  1. Linking of data of the applications and the registrations by the occupational regulatory bodies to employment outcome data.

Approximately 25% of Canada’s healthcare and social services workforce has professionals who chose to migrate to Canada. The international students will gain much valuable work experience and then can consequently apply for Canada PR or permanent residency.

Extend your study permit in Canada

A study permit allows an individual to study in Canada for a specific program or college with a specific period after which they must leave Canada. The expiry date is based on the period of the program, plus 90 days. The additional 90 days are provided to the individual to leave or extend their stay in Canada.

When to apply?

If you are willing to continue to study, it is compulsory to extend your study permit 30 days prior to its expiration date. It is crucial to look into the following aspects:

  • Ensure your passport doesn’t expire at the same time; as the extension of your study permit will not be allowed beyond the expiry date of your passport
  • You can study under the same study permit conditions only if you apply for extension before it expires, as long as you stay in Canada

In case your study permit has expired and you still wish to continue to study, you will need to apply for a new study permit and restore your temporary resident status in Canada
