Newfoundland & Labrador to open a new immigration program

Newfoundland & Labrador to open new immigration program

Newfoundland & Labrador is opening a new immigration program. It’s meant for highly educated graduates of Memorial University and skilled experienced workers.

Applications for the new immigration program will be accepted from January 2, 2021. The new program is named Priority Skills Newfoundland & Labrador. It seeks to invite highly skilled foreign candidates with specialized experience and skills in many in-demand jobs. These are jobs in areas where demand has overtaken training and recruitment in local circles, leading to a dearth of qualified manpower. E.g.,jobs in technology and ocean science.

The fresh candidates invited via this new program to work in Canada will have a minimum of 1-year experience in high-demand, highly-skilled occupations. It will also accept post-graduates with a Doctorate or Master’s degree earned within 3 years at Memorial University.

The new Canada immigration program will operate as an EOI system. The process involved in this program will be as following:

  • Interested candidates will complete an EOI.
  • They could then get an invitation to apply via Newfoundland & Labrador’s online portal.
  • Upon meeting the criteria for Skilled Worker or EE Skilled Worker categories, they will get a provincial nomination.
  • With this nomination, the candidates can get a lead in the application for Canada PR in a federal government’s immigration draw.

The applicants under this program must fill out a questionnaire. That will be assessed and those who get more than 60 points will be spotted by the employers in the province. They will notice because they have accounts with the Newfoundland & Labrador’s Office of Immigration & Multiculturalism.

A job offer is not necessary for the applicant to apply under the new immigration program. Nevertheless, the candidate will need a minimum CLB score of 5 to be eligible to apply. The language test results that have been obtained within 12 months of application will be considered valid. Moreover, the candidate must be at least 21 years of age and must have an intention to live permanently in Newfoundland & Labrador.

Canada immigration to be back in top shape with COVID-19 vaccination

Canada to get COVID-19 vaxx in 2021

Good news is around the corner for Canada immigration as the push-back against the COVID-19 pandemic has begun with vaccines now being made available. It’s expected that the majority of Canadians will get vaccinated by September 2021 and will help reach herd immunity.

Herd immunity is the condition where most of the people in a country will be immune to the pandemic, which will stop the spread of the virus. This is expected to begin early in the secondhalf of 2021. The percentage of herd immunity expected to be achieved is calculated anywhere between 50% and 90%.

With the vaccinations available in 2021, Canada can even start off with reopening immigration for those who are ready to arrive to study or work in Canada. Canadian provinces have already shown a great deal of resilience to the pandemic, with its tech and other industrial sectors keeping up to it.

The tech sector has especially shown great will and vigor in how it has performed in provinces like Ottawa, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. There has been a steady growth of postsecondary STEM graduates. The government has been granting tax credits along with offering a conducive ecosystem for start-up companies.

Tech giants as well as emerging companies are investing and operating in Canada to utilize the presence of talent in cloud computing, AI, bio-engineering, and similar fields. The federal Global Talent Stream has served as a pathway for skilled and experienced talent to Canada.

With big targets for immigration Canada has set for the 2021-2023 period, the distribution of such arrivals will have 60% in the economic class, then the family class, followed by refugees.

The long-term economic recovery and growth are highly pegged on Canada PR volume which is crucial for Canada. With the positive signs of recovery from the pandemic, Canada and its provinces are all set for a leap again in immigration.

Rules in the UAE for children traveling by air

UAE rules for children travel by air

There are certain facts we will learn here about children traveling to the UAE. This is an important part of the Dubai visit visa process too. Children traveling with family members or unaccompanied are to be understood from the immigration rules standpoint.

Unaccompanied children

The rules regarding children traveling unaccompanied changes with the specific airline and the airport’s immigration rules. Important consideration must be given to ensuring that there’s enough facility in the airline or the airport that makes it safe for the child to be able to travel without trouble. Here are the rules followed by different airlines.

Emirates Airlines

  • A child under the ages of 5 to 11 traveling alone must fly on an adult fare.
  • The same adult fare will be applicable when the child travels with an older child aged under 18 years.
  • Booking for service for unaccompanied minors aged 5 to 11 years can be made by parents.
  • The airline offers paid service for unaccompanied minors aged between 12 and 15 years.
  • Children under the age of 8 years traveling in a different cabin class to their parents’ or guardians’ will be treated as unaccompanied minors.

Etihad

  • Children under 5 years of age must always be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Free “unaccompanied minor” service can be had for children aged 5 to 11 years.
  • The booking must be made on a normal adult fare.
  • Children aged 12 to 17 can travel on an adult ticket. Unaccompanied minor service can be booked for this age group also.

Fly dubai

  • The airline doesn’t accept unaccompanied minors under the age of 12.

Air Arabia

  • Children above 12 years of age can travel alone on the airline.
  • Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a passenger aged at least 16 years.

Apart from airline stipulations, it’s necessary to know the policies followed by airports. Here are a few examples:

  • Minors who are French citizens traveling out of France unaccompanied by their parents or legal guardians must have an official authorization in hand to go out of the country. This will be in addition to their passport. The original authorization must be produced along with a copy of the parent’s or guardian’s document of identification.
  • Spanish minors aged under 18 years traveling outside of the Spanish territory not accompanied by any of the child’s legal representatives must have a declaration of travel permit outside of the national territory that’s signed, along with their passport.

New decision on temp worker visa raises hopes of the UK farmers

30,000 UK seasonal workers visa

The UK government has made an announcement that it will make 30,000 seasonal work visas available for 2021. This will enable EU and non-EU workers to come to the country and work to help pick and pack fruits and vegetables.

The UK Seasonal Worker visa program was first launched in 2019 as a pilot program. It has now been extended for another 12 months applicable for EU and non-EU workers from January 1, 2021. From January 1, 2020, the freedom of movement from the European mainland will end.

The new announcement in the UK immigration sphere is motivated by the concerns of farmers who are worried whether their crops will get destroyed without enough workers to pick and pack them to move them. The 2020 harvesting season has been a challenging one for them.

The UK government has raised the availability of the UK work visa for seasonal workers migrating to the country. The plans to actively recruit them and retain them in 2021 are also under implementation.

With the extension of the seasonal work visas, farms can now continue to hire foreign workers to work in the UK for up to 6 months. With the developments happening following this extension, the farm work will be done as needed and will provide the shoppers with fresh home grown produce.

Newfoundland & Labrador invites proposals to improve immigration

Newfoundland & Labrador invites proposals

Newfoundland & Labrador is inviting proposals to suggest how to improve its services for immigrants to the Atlantic Canadian province. This call is to better the settlement and integration services on The Rock under the NLPNP.

The emphasis will be on:

  • Support for international graduates
  • Community attachment
  • Navigation of Canada immigration pathways
  • International recruitment

The move for proposals is aimed at improving the quality of settlement services for those who arrive in Newfoundland & Labrador. The Report on the Settlement Outcomes Survey brought out key areas where immigration experience could be enhanced.

The report highlighted the need to:

  • Recognize the foreign qualifications of immigrants, and
  • Assist them in integrating themselves into the native communities

The respondents to the survey shared traits like:

  • They were comfortable communicating in French and/or English
  • They felt that their communities are safe and welcoming
  • They know Canadian rights and laws quite well

The majority of the respondents felt that access to supports and services in Canada is easy. To summarize, respondents largely felt satisfied with their life and work in Canada.

Only 2/3rd of respondents agreed to know how to get language training. Just 59% responded that access to language training was easy. Significantly, the dissatisfaction with language training was expressed by those who have been living in Canada for over 10 years.

Those with children who felt that the available childcare was completely useful was only 62.5% of the respondents. 75% knew how to enroll their children in schools. 1 in 8respondents cited that transportation was a problem for their families.

The current proposals accepted are part of the 5-year action plan that was launched in March 2017. Organizations are given time till midnight of February 5, 2021 (Newfoundland Standard Time) to submit their proposals.

The proposals can serve any of:

  • AIP endorsees
  • Provincial nominees
  • Canada PRs living in Newfoundland & Labrador
  • International students and/or graduates
  • TFWs in Newfoundland & Labrador trying to be PRs
  • Refugees
  • Canadian citizens born outside Canada

Programmers can now be issued H-1B visa as per a new verdict

Programmers can now be issued H-1B visa as per a new verdict

A recent ruling by the US Federal Court of Appeals says that H-1B visas can be issued to computer programmers after confirming what is called the “Speciality status”.

Programmers can now be issued H-1B visa as per a new verdict
The USCIS had revoked the specialty status for computer programmers in 2017. That took away their eligibility for an H-1B visa. That decision is what has been overturned by the appellate court. The verdict came as the decision for a case involving Innova Solutions that was trying to hire an Indian national as a Programmer Analyst. However, his application for an H-1B visa was not accepted.

But after the court looked into the matter, it pronounced its verdict in favor of the Indian employee. This was another verdict concerning US immigration that stood against the H-1B policy of the Trump administration.

The UK opens the new Frontier Worker Permit scheme

UK Frontier Worker Permit Scheme

The UK has opened a new Frontier Worker Permit Scheme for those who have established a regular work pattern as a frontier worker before the Brexit transition completes. This is a new immigration route that opened on December 10, 2020, reserved for EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals. It provides them an alternative to the EU Settlement Scheme.

The UK opens the new Frontier Worker Permit scheme

Under the new scheme, from July 2021, every frontier worker must hold a UK work permit visa to get entry into the UK. The eligibility to work in UK under this scheme requires the candidate to be:

  • An EU, EEA, or Swiss national
  • Not primarily a resident in the UK
  • Working or self-employed in the UK if not having a retained status

The new scheme has been announced in the UK to meet certain obligations related to Brexit.

The Frontier Worker Permit scheme is apparently targeting international travelers, especially from Zurich, Paris, or Dublin, traveling to the UK for the purpose of business.

The Frontier Worker Permit scheme route offers more flexibility than UK visit visa rules on sources of payment and activities allowed during the time spent in the UK.

For current workers, the Frontier Worker Permit is granted for 5 years. For those with a retained status, the Permit is granted for 2 years. The Permit’s renewal process is straightforward. It doesn’t offer a route to indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Canada doing its best to attract tech-skilled foreigners

Canada solving tech labor needs

Canada’s labor market has suffered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the country is making efforts to attract skilled foreign workers to fill its labor market job vacancies. A report has been published by Innovation Economy Council in December 2020 citing Canada’s efforts in this direction.

Though jobs in the IT sector suffered losses due to COVID-19-induced lockdown, STEM jobs have shown better performance and have recovered very well. STEM-related employment across Canada was 8.7% higher in October 2020 than in February 2020. Such jobs include engineers, programmers, and other tech workers.

The flexibility of transitioning online has kept tech jobs intact even in the face of pandemic-related issues. The tech giants who have stationed in Canada take advantage of this fact and are trying to recruit more tech-savvy candidates in Canada.

Toronto is now called Silicon Valley. But even with the best environment present in Canada, many skilled people have been moving to the US eyeing higher salaries. This drain of bright Canadians has been going on till recently when US President Donald Trump suspended the H-1B program.

Canadian companies took this opportunity to attract people from the US to work in Canada. But since there is a gap that is created in the tech jobs scene due to the movement of tech graduates from Canada to the US, Canada is forced to compensate with foreign talent.

This is where Canada immigration plays a significant role. The country has set a high target of 400,000 new Canada PRs per year between 2021 and 2023. This influx of immigrants will also contain the solution to the tech jobs crisis it’s facing and lead to economic recovery.

The GTS is a fast-track federal immigration program that helps employers attract and keep highly skilled TFWs. Employers recruiting foreign employees under the GTS will have to get an LMIA.

Canada’s immigration process is streamlined with features like fast visa processing and greater opportunities. A foreign national can arrive in Canada via GTS within 4 weeks in which 2 weeks will all that be taken to process the application.

Australia gets more requests to extend the family visa facility

Australian family visa concession asked to be extended

In November 2020, the Australian government removed the requirement for partner and family visa applicants to leave Australia to get their visas after placing their visa application. This is considering the present COVID-19 situation. This change was decided to be implemented in early 2021.

Now, many are asking the government to extend the temporary concession on family visa further. Julian Hill, the Labor MP, stated that there are many families with the same feeling and wants the rule to be relaxed.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation is making it hard to do international travel. Also, the inherent risks of infection involved in travel and the possibility of delayed or cancelled return travel to Australia owing to canceled flights in the other country are matters of concern.

Hence, the government is currently urged to enable family members in Australia currently to be able to apply for the visa without leaving the country. The government has now to do more in this regard as this will be a significant decision in Australia immigration.

Canada responds prudently to the new virus situation in the UK

Canada suspends flights from the UK

A mutant variant of COVID-19 has been found active in the UK and world countries have been alerted of the new development. Canada is closely monitoring this new development. The country’s trying to understand the impact of this new variant of the virus. It’s partnering with international bodies including the WHO.

The Canada immigration activities that have already been conducted in line with safety protocols for COVID-19 are now getting a stricter implementation.

The Canadian Prime Minister convened a meeting of the Incident Response Group on December 20, 2020, to discuss the new variant of the COVID-19 virus that has appeared in the UK. The meeting had the participation of:

  • Bill Blair – Minister of Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness
  • Patty Hajdu – Minister of Health
  • Dominic LeBlanc – President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada & Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs
  • Marc Garneau – Minister of Transport
  • Philippe Champagne – Minister of Foreign Affairs François

Though the new virus variant is speculated to be more transmissible, no evidence is as yet available to prove that the virus is more severe and has an impact on vaccine efficacy and antibody response.

Following the new development in the pandemic situation, Canada has decided to suspend entry of all commercial and private passenger flights from the UK into the country for 72 hours, starting the midnight of December 20, 2020.

The existing restriction on travelling into the country will be maintained. So will be the measures of compulsory quarantine continued. In addition, passengers who arrived in Canada on December 20, 2020, subject to secondary screening. The enhanced measures that were implemented included increased scrutiny of quarantine plans. Additional instructions will be given to those who have arrived from the UK by the Canadian government.
