Making more progress on the easing of COVID-19 induced restrictions, France is aiming at lifting the lockdown currently imposed across the country. Nevertheless, there will be a daily curfew that will be introduced from 9pm to 7am. Cinemas, museums, and theaters will be allowed to function with adherence to COVID-19 health protocol.

Also, French citizens will be allowed to celebrate holidays with their families on December 24 and 31, 2020. Free travel throughout the French territory will be allowed on these days even though gatherings on streets will be prohibited.

UK’s Tech Nation visa’s demand soars as year-end closes in

UK tech visa applications

There has been a jump in demand for the UK’s Tech Nation visa (Global Talent visa) as EU citizens have been given access to the visa. The visa will allow tech-based workers to arrive and work in UK and tech entrepreneurs and innovators to set up their enterprises.

As the year-end nears, the visa is largely in demand

The number of applications for this visa received in the last 2 years is 2,000. In 2020, the demand for the visa rose by 48%. It is a progression from 2019’s count of 45%. The Tech Nation visa will open the path for more people applying for the visa. As the completion of the Brexit process is nearing, the demand for the Tech Nation visa is expected to increase even more. It’s the UK work visa for EU nationals.

The tech scene in the UK

Tech Nation has data that over half of the successful applicants in 2020 are now employed with the UK’s leading technology firms. Over a quarter of the applicants are founders with companies established in the UK.

With 59% of Tech Nation visa applicants having their base there, London dominates the booming tech sector of the UK. Most of the applications for the Tech Nation visa comes from the US, Nigeria, and India.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not dipped the enthusiasm of tech-talents worldwide to work in the UK’s tech sector. This factor alone can be largely instrumental in helping the country recover from the losses that the pandemic created. With this visa, UK immigration will gain new momentum for sure.

The UK extends foreign health workers’ visa by a year for free

UK extends visas for foreign healthcare workers

In more positive updates from the UK immigration scene, over 6,000 health workers have been declared eligible to continue in the UK for another year. They will offer their services longer for the UK as their visas have been extended for free. This is a significant decision as the country is dealing with the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These health workers include:

  • Psychologists,
  • Paramedics
  • Midwives
  • Nurses
  • Doctors
  • Occupational therapists

Apart from them, there are those included who are present to work in UK to help the country get out of the pandemic crisis. The visas for health professionals have been extended from October 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021.

The valuable contribution of these frontline workers in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic has been well-recognized and rewarded at all opportunities by the government.

Migrant NHS workers, overstayers can now stay back in the UK

Overstayers not penalized anymore in UK

The UK’s Home Office has eased visa restrictions for:

  • NHS workers
  • Migrant entrepreneurs
  • Overstayers

This has been done considering the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. The move is expected to give more credibility to UK immigration.

  • Penalties for overstaying have been eliminated.
  • NHS workers who are now in the UK on a visa can work anywhere for any number of hours.

The new rules benefit overseas NHS staff, entrepreneurs, international students, and those who have overstayed their UK visas. The NHS has confirmed that no adverse immigration consequences will be imposed on those whose visa or leave to remain got expired in the period from January 24, 2020, and August 31, 2020, and who didn’t submit an application to extend their stay in the UK.

Even when such exemption from a penalty is granted, there’s a catch in a certain case. Those who didn’t apply for an extension of visa after expiry, for their current stay in the UK will have to make arrangements to exit UK in case they apply for another UKvisa.

A request for additional time to stay in the UK is granted for foreign nationals who were due to leave the country in November 2020. This is granted if they have not been able to leave owing to restrictions on flights, or being tested positive for COVID-19.

Relaxations by visa type
NHS Workers
Overseas NHS workers can now work at any hospital during COVID-19. They can serve in any job in healthcare, at any skill level. There will be no cap on the number of hours they can work.
Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa (now Innovator visa)
Innovator visa holders need not hire a minimum of 2 people for 12 months consecutively. There can be multiple jobs assigned to the candidates in the 12 months which needn’t be consecutive.
International students
International students can now start to study in UK even before their Tier 4 visa has been issued.  For this, they must have confirmed admission to a course of study at their place or an application must be made for renewal of their existing visa before its expiration.
British nationals overseas
British nationals overseas trying to apply for a passport can submit the application online with the Home Office.

The travel restrictions at the border will be extended and US travelers won’t be permitted to come to Canada on a tourist visa, or for entertainment or shopping. Only travelers from the US arriving in Canada for a non-discretional, non-optional reason are exempt from the travel restrictions. Most of these travelers must go through the 14-day quarantine.

ArriveCAN is Canada’s bright idea to prevent COVID-19 spread

ArriveCAN app mandatory

The updates from the Canada immigration scene brings the news that it has now become mandatory for all travelers to Canada to provide the following details while entering Canada.

  • Contact information
  • Quarantine information

One of the initiatives that Canada has introduced to ensure that Canadians and travelersarriving on a Canada visitor visa or otherways are safe from COVID-19 is the ArriveCAN app.

ArriveCAN is an online app that is a platform to submit mandatory travel information on and after the traveler’s entry into Canada.

The app helps you to forgo the need to fill a paper formin order to furnish the essential details. As of November 21, 2020, if you are flying and Canada is your final destination, you must submit the following via ArriveCAN:

  • Travel and contact details
  • Quarantine plan
  • Self-assessment of COVID-19 symptoms

The app must be used before boarding the flight to Canada. The window to submit information via the app opens 90 days before the flight. If the traveler submits his/her information by signing in to the ArriveCAN online, the window opens 14 days before the flight.

After the information is submitted via ArriveCAN, the traveler will get a receipt displayed. That receipt will have to be shown to the officer for Canadian border services as a screenshot from the app or as a printout.

The mandatory submission of information via ArriveCAN is applicable to travelers arriving by land or seatoo. This will accelerate the processing at the border by limiting points of contact.

After entering Canada, travelers must submit a report daily except if they have entered with exemptions. The reports must be to:

  • Confirm that you have reached the address given via the app for quarantine or self-isolation, within 48 hours of the traveler’s entry into Canada.
  • Complete COVID-19 self-assessment for symptoms until the candidate’s quarantine period is not completed or until he/she reports symptoms.
